Activities - Learning through play
At Little Rascals we plan every day in nursery to ensure your child receives
the best learning opportunities in a safe, fun and caring environment whilst
ensuring we meet the individual needs of each child.
Every child is given their own peg with name and photo, a blue bag for their
belongings and a hivis jacket for outdoor activities.
Mini and Little Rascals (aged 12 months to 3 years)
Mini and Little Rascals (aged 12 months to 3 years) are divided into two
groups that join together for extra learning opportunities. All activities are
based on Birth to Three curriculum, but are adapted to suit each child's
development.
Mini and Little Rascals is divided into five areas:
- Messy area - contains a two person easel for mark making and painting, it
also has a sand and water tray.
- Home roleplay area - with large easygrip utensils, play food and a seating
area with sofas to help develop children's social skills. And other
roleplay items are also available, such as dressing up and play babies.
- Quiet area - with books and soft mats and cushions under camouflaged
leaves to create a setting.
- Small world area - encourages children to show knowledge of everyday activities,
such as, cars, people, animals etc.
- Construction area - with wooden constructions, shape sorters and bead
frames which all help children's fine motor skills, hand to eye
co-ordination and exploratory senses.
- Meal area - where children share snack and meal times together and take
part in social discussions.
Big Rascals (aged 3 to 5 years)
Our bigger Rascals is a pre-school and follows the
Foundation Stage curriculum to prepare them for school, build their independence
and help develop confidence. This includes helping children to learn number
skills, letter sounds and other simple skills.
Big Rascals is divided into five areas:
- Creative area - contains a sandtray, large four person easel (one side for
painting and the other for graphics), a messy table for messy activities and
malleable exploration, for example, playdough, cornflour, clay etc.
- Quiet area - a camouflaged comfy area with cushions and teddys where
children can read, explore print and pictures in books and relax.
- Small world area - for construction activities set on tabletop units for
children to explore and share social activities with their peers and to help
them develop their communication skills.
- Roleplay area - with cooker, household units, play food and utensils for
children to re-act their own life experiences and IT equipment, such as
telephones and CD players for modern roleplay.
- Meal area - where children share snack and meal times together and take
part in social discussions.
